Hi guys! I would appreciate any feedback on these two short essays I've typed for the writing supplement for USC transfers. :)
1) USC students are known to be involved. Briefly describe a non-academic pursuit (such as service to community or family, a club or sport, or work, etc.,) that best illustrates who you are, and why it is important to you.
“We don’t make keys!” was the phrase I used the most throughout my time in Key Club. Initially, I thought Key Club was dedicated to making keys too, but at the end of my time in the club I finally understood what it meant. When I first entered Key Club I didn’t do service and thought that it was boring, but boy was I wrong. The events I’ve done in Key Club have been some of the most fun events I’ve participated in during high school. My favorite events that we would do annually are our school’s “Trick-or-Treat Street” event where kids would play games in exchange for candy and ringing bells for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. The events we did were diverse, but they always made me feel the same way. At the end of each event I would always feel more positive and optimistic about life. Constantly hearing “thank you” while volunteering makes me happier because it reminds me that even the smallest action can make a difference and make a person feel grateful. By the end of my time in Key Club I gained a love for service and developed an awareness of its impact on myself and the community, but more importantly I understood why we were called Key Club. The club does makes keys, metaphorically of course, the club produces individuals who have a passion for volunteering; these individuals are the key to a brighter future.
2) Describe your academic interests and how you plan to pursue them at USC. Please feel free to address your first- and second-choice major selections.
My love for science stems from the fact that I’m a kinesthetic learner; I like to learn by doing! Since elementary my favorite part of school has been doing experiments because I get to figure out how things work by myself rather than somebody just telling me. To this day, that still rings true, my favorite part of classes in college are the lab portions of my science classes. The labs give me a chance to learn new material by doing and not just by reading. In addition to science I also like working with kids; they provide me with a break from the mundane adult world I’m slowly entering! I took these two interests and decided to become a pediatrician. While at University of Southern California I plan to continue pursuing this path. The rigorous biology program taught by highly qualified professors will definitely prepare me for the MCAT. Additionally, I can further utilize my kinesthetic learner qualities by applying for BISC290, the undergraduate research course, which will provide me with real world experience before I even start working. In order to keep up with our advancing world I also plan to pursue a minor in Spanish. The excellent study abroad programs Dornsife offers in Madrid and Valencia, Spain will give me the chance to practice the language while also learning about the Spanish culture. By going to USC, not only will I become a more globally minded individual, I will be prepared to face any scientific or medical problem I encounter.
