Hopefully I am posting this in the right section, if not, please move :)
I will do my best to keep this short, I have a lot of general questions that I need help with.
Background: I basically flunked out my freshmen year of college. My boyfriend ended up getting his dream job, we moved to a new state, and after a 5 years break, I'm reading to go back to school finally.
I've identified the problems that caused me to fail last time (working 40 hours+ a week, relying on others for transportation, too many pets, first year living with boyfriend, social anxiety, too many advanced classes in one semester, undecided/loss interest in becoming a veterinarian) and solutions (only going to work 2 days first quarter, bike/public bus for transport, only have a dog and cat now, have lived with boyfriend (who has a good paying job) for 5 years now so ironed out all the kinks, have less social anxiety now, only going to take one course w/ lab per quarter, passionate to pursue psychology.)
I'm enrolled for Fall 2016 at Los Angeles City College, and have completed my registration, orientation, placement exam, and have my counseling appointment next Tuesday. My end goal is to transfer to DU for a PsyD (I don't want a phD because I want to focus on applied clinical and don't want to focus on research. In order to practice as a psychologist in CO, you need a doctorate's. A PsyD meets these needs. I want to move back to and stay in CO.).
My current education plan is as follows:
-Obtain an AA-T in Psychology AND/OR 105 transferrable units
-Transfer to a CA University (not sure which one, considering UCLA)
-Obtain BA in Psychology at CA University (also find internship, research, and volunteer opportunities in field)
-Enter CA graduate school, obtain MA in Psychology
-Move back to CO, transfer to DU to get PsyD (wish we could just move to CO for my BA, but he can't get a job in CO)
After school:
-Sign up with Public Service Loan Forgiveness and similar programs
-Work at government/non profit agency for 10 years
I've been trying to draft up quarter class schedule plans, and am struggling with a few questions.
1). Is it better to transfer with or without an AA?
2). is it better to transfer with the min IGETC/transfer units (around 50), or with the max allowed 105 transferable units? (Classes I would want to take are upper level courses- ENG 102, CHEM 101, BIO 6, SPANISH 2+, ASL 2+)
3) Is it better to transfer as a sophomore, or as a junior? (I just figured it'd make sense to take more transferable unit classes at a CC, since they are only $46/unit-a lot cheaper).
4a) Would it be useful to take BOTH Spanish *and* ASL, with goals to minor/study extensively in both? (Not to meet GE unit requirements, but because I thought they both could come in handy in the future. Ideally, I want to become fluent in Spanish-for profession and traveling, and ASL-for profession).
4b) If I go that route, what level of Spanish and ASL should I take at the CC? One course? Two? More?
4c) Would it make a difference if I declare it as a minor, or instead just take a lot of classes?
5) How many units should I take each quarter? I was thinking around 15.
Thank you so much for any help. I know that the counselor will help with this, but I want to come somewhat prepared since it's only a 30 min session. :)
