Hey everyone, I'm a student at ERAU, going into my junior year.
So... I attended ERAU in 2008-2009. Did poorly in classes (helps if you actually put in effort) and kinda blew my GPA. Didnt feel confident in my chosen degree so I went to a community college while I sorted myself out. Did better there, got my act together, and realized that I loved engineering and that if i put forth the effort, I could do well in my courses. Decided that I would go back to ERAU to finish what I started. The old GPA still counted against me, so i retook courses at the community college that I did poorly in at ERAU to improve my "effective" ERAU GPA so that i could be readmitted. Now, I didnt do prior research and the admissions implied that the GPA from the CC classes of the transfer, or replacement, courses would also transfer along with the transfer credits. This was not the case, now unsurprisingly. I became readmitted this past Spring.
So to present day, my old courses and the GPA from them are counting against me. The transfer credits did go through, so those courses are considered complete and I can keep going forward with my degree. When i asked my advisor why my GPA was so terrible still, i was imformed about credits transferring but not the GPA. Apparently this has happened quite a bit, however I am the first to have a previous GPA from ERAU. Or at least the first to fight it. So i went to the dean of students, he agreed that my old GPA, from 6 years prior, should not be considered against me. Partially because it was so long ago, mostly because it would boost retention if prior students could return without the huge hit on the GPA, and also because its that many more classes I'd have to retake to graduate with a GPA that accurately reflects my academic effort. Had i transferred to any other college my GPA slate would be clean. Unfortunately there is no "grade forgiveness" policy in place at ERAU. So i could return in 10 years and my low GPA from 2008 would still count against me. Even if a policy was enacted, I wouldnt be grandfathered in either. Since my dean is awesome, we are gonna fight the policy against counting GPA from the CC transfer.
So my question is, does anyone know of universities or colleges with a transfer GPA policy? Google is not turning up anything since it is so rare. Having other schools that do have the policy as references would go a long way in our fight.
My GPA since returning has been exclellent and I have recommendations from my professors that support this move. Hopefully these factors, along with other schools having this policy will be enough to get the board to alter the policy.
Thank you all for any help in the matter.
