Hi all, wanted to start a discussion thread for everybody applying to transfer to Harvard for Fall 2016!

Whitman College vs. Wesleyan University

So I'm a current Freshmen (or I guess Sophomore now) at Emerson College in Boston, and to say the least, I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. There's a lot of things I don't like about the school, but they basically come down to these three points: 1. The academics are way too easy and not challenging at all. I had way more free time than I should have. I'm an English/Creative Writing major, and while Emerson is a good school for that, I still want more of a challenge, and I know there are better schools out there. 2. Boston is a great city, but I'm just not a city person at all. I've lived in the suburbs my whole life, and I've always loved nature and the like. Emerson has no real campus. It's right in the middle of downtown Boston which is great for food and shopping, but I thought I'd get used to an urban environment after one year. Turns out I never did. So if I transfer, I would like a school that has an actual campus. 3. I don't really fit in with the student body. The typical Emerson student body is cheery, eccentric, and very very liberal. I tend to be quiet, laid back, and pretty easy going. I'm also not against liberals or anything, but I tend to lean more on the conservative side of things when it comes to politics. Currently, my two top schools to transfer to are Whitman and Wesleyan. They both seem to have what I want, and are not impossible or overly difficult to transfer into (i.e. Amherst, Vassar). My current college GPA is around a 3.8-3.9 (second semester grades haven't come out yet), so I believe I at least have a chance at getting into Whitman and Wesleyan. The problem is that Whitman is all the way in Washington (I'm from NY), and my parents don't really want me going across the country. They're okay with me going, but only if it's a last resort. I like Wesleyan, and they're probably more well known than Whitman, but they seem pretty similar overall. They both have great English/Writing programs. They both have beautiful campuses. But the thing is, Wesleyan kind of seems like a more prestigious Emerson (in terms of artsy, overly liberal student body and such). I really think Whitman's student body would be a better fit (they're still liberal but not as much and they also seem more laid back), but I'm just not sure yet. So, I guess I'm having trouble deciding between the two. I personally like Whitman more, but it is very far away. The distance is more of an issue with my parents than with me. I just don't want to end up going to Wesleyan (if I get accepted), and feel the same way I did at Emerson. Thanks for reading.

Transferring without completing a specific course?

Hey everyone, so I have a couple of friends at my community college that have been accepted to some universities and will be transferring for Fall 2017. The thing is that, one of them was required to take a math and got accepted, but was told he could take his class at their school for next semester. My other friend who is a Chem major, was required to take O-chem and is also doing the same, finishing her O-chem at the campus. How does this work? I need to take Calc now and was wondering if I could possibly do the same for my transfer? I was looking at some UC's and Cal States. Also, if I do begin taking Calc, can I do a semester here and finish off at the campus?

Brown VS Pomona!!! (Help needed)

I am a former Pitzer College student who is currently deciding between attending Brown University or Pomona College as a transfer student for the remainder of my undergraduate years. As a Claremont College student, I was generally happy, had a great network of friends, close relationships with professors (especially those from Pomona), and enjoyed my first of college tremendously. I was extremely excited to receive the acceptance from Pomona because I really wanted to stay in Claremont. However, then I got into Brown. The reason I have begin to sway towards Brown is because it has seemingly better departments in the fields I would like to study in: Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and English. Moreover, as an East Coast student, Brown seems to offer better opportunities post graduation. For example, I aspire to be a writer for a publication like the New York Times. Finally, Brown has a liberal, vibrant campus culture that seems, on paper, like a place I would really click with and be in my zone at. By contrast, Claremont tends to become a little bit stale in both its party culture and social scene. But Pomona is safer... I have amazing friends there and would undoubtedly have a great three more years in college. But Brown seems, on paper, like a better place for me. So what do you think I should pick?

Will my admission to Berkeley be rescinded?

So I was admitted into cal for spring of 2017 tonight and just realized that I am in violation of one of the terms of conditions. I am fully Igetc certified besides the one math course requirement. I was unable to take the planned math course in the spring due to it being a high impacted course. I am taking the math course in the summer. Is that going to be acceptable since I won't be attending cal until spring of 2017? As long as I have it done by the summer will this effect my admission? If so, I will appeal and rescinded admission because I know if there is a will, there is a way. Please I know I made a mistake by avoiding taking this math course, but please give straight up advice as to what I can do further or if I should just give up. Which I won't because once I get into my dream school, there is no other option.

UCLA or Berkeley (Philosophy and future MBA student)

I know this topic has come up a hundred times because I've read around 100 threads on it already, but I still can't decide. My situation: -Will save $20k going to UCLA -Want to get an MBA -Doing undergrad in Philosophy I know Berkeley is much more oriented toward business but I'm doing Philosophy for my undergrad. Is there any benefit to me as a Philosophy student planning to do grad school in business to go to Berkeley over UCLA, given I'll save $20k at UCLA? My end goal is to get into the best business school possible after undergrad, which means I will also be applying to the ivy leagues.

UC Berkeley Genetics and Plant Biology vs UC Davis Plant Biology

I'm really conflicted :( Does anyone have any info on either of these programs? I feel like this might be one of those weird situations where the program is actually better at UC Davis even though it is a lower ranked UC. Then again, I don't know much about the College of Natural Resources at Berkeley.

Denied to Florida State University for excess credits?

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and im looking to hopefully get a rational answer for my case. I was looking to transfer into FSU for fall '16.My major is industrial engineer. I am currently in Florida International University, as a mechanical engineer, because FIU does not offer industrial engineer. I started FIU fall '15 to take classes that I thought would apply towards my requirements for the FSU industrial engineer program. I attended Miami Dade College for 3 and a half years and earned 90 credits witha 3.7 GPA. My current GPA in FIU is 3.9 ( through 11 credits). Originally, I got denied because I made a mistake and I put I was an incoming transfer student looking to get a second bachelors, which is wrong as I am still missing pretty much all my upper division courses. After speaking to admissions and my program mapping coordinator, I was informed that I wouldve been denied anyhow because I have too many credits. This doesn't make sense to me however, and I'm trying to look for second opinions on this, as I feel I have been treated unfairly by program coordinator. I was actually accepted into FSU about a year and half ago when I was coming out of community college. I couldn't attend due to personal and financial reasons. I decided I would start FIU in the meantime, in order to knock off courses and not waste time. After hearing I was denied, I immediately emailed my program mapping coordinator, who I was told is the only person that could review this and change the decision. She originally didnt respond to my email or my calls, After seeing this, I emailed the person in charge of my program. I explained to him my situation, and he responded that he didn't understand why i had been denied, but that this wasn't his area. He forward my email to an advisor, who also said he didn't understand why I had been denied, but explained to me I would have to directly speak with my mapping coordinator. He forward the email to her, and she responded to this. She vaguely explained to me I had been denied because of my mistake, but that regardless I wouldve been denied for my excess credits. I formally replied to her explaining to her my situation, how I did not know having too many credits would've affected my decision, and that I had been accepted a year ago. She did not respond to this. Understandably, I was very lost and confused, as I was looking for answer. For the next two weeks she did not pick up my phone calls, or respond to my emails or voicemail that I left her. I emailed admissions again explaining to them how she wasn't responding and that I found this to be very rude and unprofessional. They forward the email to her, and once again, she respond to this, She repeated herself again, and at the end of the email responded to the comment I made to admissions about her being unprofessional. I really do not feel like I'm getting fair judgement, I feel like this lady is being really subjective. Many of the staff at FSU who I have spoken to have told me that the excess credits shouldnt be a problem, considering I have outstanding grades. I am looking to take this to someone else , but I do not know who. I was thinking of Dean of Student Affairs, but I'm not sure if this correspond to them. Has anyone had this kind of experience in any other universities ? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Transferring from Cal Poly Pomona for Philosophy

Hello everyone, I recently applied for Transfer at a couple of UCs and got rejected by every single one. I also applied to both Pitzer and NYU, but I highly doubt I will get into either of them due to their being highly selective for transfers. So, below are my stats and I really would appreciate some advice on how to better bolster my application and perhaps some better places to apply for Spring transfer. Obviously I'm doing this because while the philosophy staff at CPP is very good, I feel as if other schools will provide me with better guidance and instruction that will move me towards my goals. GPA: 3.83 (It will hopefully go up a little bit after this quarter) SAT Scores: Not Applicable Writing Ability: Generally I'm a fairly good writer, so I shouldn't have too many problems on college essays. Letters of Rec: I have two philosophy professors and an English professor who know me well enough to write some pretty good essays. ECs: This is where I struggle quite a bit, I co-own a business so most of my time is trapped making sure I am able to help with its day-to-day operation. Besides that, I do private tutoring for several people. Also, in my upcoming quarter I am going to be doing Ethics Bowl. This fall I plan to apply for spring transfer at: Pitzer (again), NYU (again), University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas at Austin I think I could certainly improve my ECs to get into a couple of places, but some advice on what to do to so my interest in philosophy (the philosophy club at my school is a little lacking) and more particularly in the philosophy of education would be helpful. Also, as I said above, maybe some advice on just where I should apply so I don't go in quite so blind this time around would be extremely helpful!

Hey y'all! I am a senior in high school and i got deferred fall semester but admitted spring semester at ole miss next year. is I got into the College of Charleston but i really don't want to go there and i desperately want to go to ole miss. It really sucks because i have to wait for all fall while everyone is rushing and meeting new friends while I'm attending a school i do not want to go to. i already put my deposit down for spring at ole miss and set on going there. Long story short, do you think it will be hard to for me to transfer second semester when everyone already has met new friends and are in sororities. i have a few friends at ole miss but i just have a feeling it is going to be hard for me to fit in second semester!

Hello All, Since I haven't noticed any threads for transfer students who've applied for regular decision for Fall 2016, I thought I'd make one. I applied as a Junior transfer with a 3.6 GPA and will be graduating at my current institution with two AA degrees in Communication Studies and Social and Behavioral Sciences, though I hope to raise my GPA to a 3.7. Are any of you guys Junior transfers as well?

Staying for Friends vs Transferring for Career

After two semesters at my current school, I realized I made so many close friends in college who wouldn't give up ever; perhaps they ended up even closer to me than my high school friends. I used to be extremely adamant about transferring, but having friends there had given me second thoughts of not transferring. I already payed for all the materials I needed to transfer, but I also deposited housing fees in case I wanted to stay at my current school. My main reason for transferring was to get a strong education in animation. My current school does not offer animation. Becoming an animator of a cartoon or a film had always been a dream of mine, and it's hard to learn the proper skills in animation without taking actual animation courses. My artistic skills are well-developed, and I know my art portfolio is strong. I'm confident that I'll get accepted by the schools I applied to. I'm probably being too arrogant here. However, the friends I made here had made an impact on my social life. It was a huge difference from the huge cliquey intimidating feeling in high school I got from people back when I was stuck in my shell and extremely shy. I bonded quickly with the people I met on my floor mainly because we all signed up to live in the same residential learning community. I met people who had similar interests from playing video games and watching anime to having a focus on academics. I found friends who enjoyed being around me, and I enjoyed being around them. If I transferred, I'm afraid that I would lose contact with them, and would have trouble finding friends when I transfer. Some of them don't frequent social media or use cell phones often. I'm also bad with long-distance friendships. I rarely speak to the high school friends I used to be close to. However if I don't transfer, I won't get the experience I need for a career in animation. I want to have guidance from someone who has experience in animation to improve my skills in animating. Staying at my current school for my whole four undergrad years would be pointless for learning animation. I'm unsure of what decision to make. To sum everything up with less words: Should I choose my friends or my career?

How does the Spring 16 transfer work?

If I don't get in for the fall 16 semester I want to try one more time by applying for the spring 16 semester, will I have to take summer school to raise my GPA or do they also look at my fall grades. Will they wait for my final transcript to see my fall grades before their decision to admit? The application is due in October so I don't see how my fall 16 grades will factor into the spring 16 application.

w or affect my gpa?

So I am a film production major at a community college and I am planning to transfer to UCLA in about 1 and a half years. I am currently taking an intro to electronic media class (as part of my GE) and thinking about dropping it because the workload is just too much with work and my other classes. Just wanted to know if you guys think that it's better to get a "W" on my record (first one) or just go through with the class and most likely get a C? P.S. My current gpa is 3.93 and I'm honestly trying not to go any lower than that to increase my chances of getting in to UCLA since I don't have much time to do extracurricular activities to add to my sort of "admission portfolio" i guess.
